Are you ready to challenge what you thought you knew about math and science? In this video, we dive deep into the intriguing world where units in science seem to defy the order of operations! We’ll revisit the fundamentals of PEMDAS and explore how it applies—or doesn’t apply—to units in scientific calculations.
Discover why units are not just numbers and how they have their own set of rules prioritizing clarity and consistency over strict mathematical interpretations. We’ll cover best practices for writing units, including the proper use of the centered dot for multiplication and the solidus for division. Learn about common pitfalls, such as when multiplication takes precedence over division in unit notation, and how to avoid confusing mistakes that can derail your calculations.
Whether you’re a science student eager to deepen your understanding or just curious about the quirks of unit notation, this video is packed with insights that will enhance your mathematical and scientific skills. Don’t let simple unit errors trip you up—master the conventions that make scientific communication precise and unambiguous!
Join us on this educational journey and take your unit game to the next level!
UPDATE! An astute viewer pointed out that the inferred grouping multiplication after a solidus isn’t just limited to unit notation, but can actually be found in mathematical equations. It seems to be a thing in certain physics books (and still can be avoided with the use of parentheses)!
So order of operations and unit notation may be more synced than I thought on this though fewer people write equations like that then write units like that…

I’ve been experimenting a lot with Adobe Character Animator and After Effects, so let me know what you think of the new format. A huge thanks to Dave Werner (Okay Samurai) for all of his excellent tutorials and puppets for Character Animator. A truly talented teacher!
