You can buy a snow globe or take chemistry and MAKE YOUR OWN! This is one of my favorite laboratory activities and it exploits the unusual solubility of benzoic acid. It is not very soluble at room temperature, but gets quite a bit more soluble at higher temperatures.
But once dissolved, the benzoic acid can only stay soluble at high temperatures. As the water cools down, the solution is holding more benzoic acid than it normally can… it’s become supersaturated. The benzoic acid will then precipitate out and form the beautiful snow-like crystals.
Benzoic acid can definitely irate skin and, though considered non-toxic, should be handled with professional guidance, like all laboratory chemicals!
Stay safe and thanks for stopping by!
